Fool's Gold

We bought a few gold panning pans this summer and we haven't had a chance to use them yet on any of our camping trips. So I set up a tub in the yard with some dirt and water for a little panning practice.
I spiked the dirt with some lead shot and bee bees to act as our gold and give us something to find.
Since Caidan and I are always up for a project we made a wooden sluice box to improve our productivity.
Then of course we needed to see how well it was going to work, so we hooked it up to the garden hose to simulate a running creek. Hey look, it works!
Later I attached a bilge pump to a 12 volt battery to recirculate the water. Now we'll be able to just fill up some buckets with soil from our nearest glory hole and bring them back to camp to separate our riches.
Mostly it's just something fun for us to do together. What boy doesn't like to play with water and dirt........ a.k.a. mud?
Me and the boys hard at "work".

Hey Mike, if you file some lead off a lead fishing sinker, you get a bit of "gold(lead) dust" that is heavier than your sand/dirt to find in pan. (guess whos class did gold panning this term. Oh and dn't be hogging mud as a "boy activity" us girls like it too.
Happy Thanksgiving!"
